MLK Day Special: Has Corporate Leadership Changed?

Even the most diverse companies fall short

We love reporting on the workforce

Despite the accomplishments of the Civil Rights movement, the representation of Black employees in the leadership of large companies still leaves a lot to be desired - Black Americans represent 13.4% of the US population but only 10.4% of senior positions in large public companies. Of course, this varies a lot by company, as Revelio Labs' HR database illustrates.

Below are the companies with the highest and lowest concentration of Black employees in senior positions:

And below are the companies that have changed the most and least in the last several years:

Takeaways:

  • Walmart, FedEx, and AT&T have the highest concentration of Black senior managers, yet even they fall short of a nationally representative leadership team, Revelio Labs data show.
  • Big tech companies, like Facebook, Amazon, Alphabet, and Apple have decreased their representation of Black senior managers over other companies -- a problematic trend in big tech.
  • Consistent with our 2020 Roundup, Facebook has the lowest overall distribution of Black senior managers and is also seeing the most significant decrease in recent years.
